Ears pierced

I had my ears pierced as a baby so I always knew that if I ever had a baby girl, I would get her ears pierced.  I’ve noticed with my pregnancy and nursing that everyone is going to have an opinion about if you should or shouldn’t or how and when to do things so I got my share of people offering their opinions about me piercing their ears.  In the end, they are my daughters and it was my decision.  I’m glad I did it.

I was starting to have second thoughts yesterday morning so I even called my pediatrician’s office to ask for advice.  My nurse told me that as long as the girls have had their first tetanus shot, which they had, that it was fine.  I also called a friend who recently had her daughter’s ears pierced when she was two months old, and she seemed to calm my nerves.  I gave them some baby Tylenol, and we were off to Daniel’s Jewelers at the Riverside Plaza.

Isabelle was first.  I sat in a high stool chair with Izzy facing sideways.  I held her arm down with one hand and her head to my chest with the other.  Obviously, she cried.  After they did the second ear, I turned her towards me, gave her her binky, and comforted her.  She immediately stopped crying.  I handed her over to my mom, and she spent the rest of the time gazing at the balloons they had up in the store.

Abigail was second.  Her cry was on a different level than Izzy’s.  She had that cry when she opens her mouth but nothing comes out for 15 seconds, and then it’s mass hysteria.  However, after her second ear was done, she immediately stopped as soon as I gave her her binky and started rocking her.  We were there probably a good 10 minutes after their ears were done to pay the bill and get them strapped back in their car seats.  They didn’t cry.  The salesgirls even commented that the twins were the easiest babies they had pierced.  They said that most of the babies continue to cry even as their parents are exiting the store.

We took them home, fed them, bathed them, and even as I was cleaning their earrings with the cleaning solution, they didn’t even flinch.  I have to twist their earrings three times a day and clean them a couple of times a day.  Everytime I do this, there is no resistance.  It went better than I expected.  They look adorable!  Above are some before and after pictures.  Babies with pierced ears…I love it!

Was searching for my GF’s blog and came across yours. Loved your description about having your 3 month old twin dd’s ears pierced.

This was a perfect age to pierce her ears! You were a smart mommy for doing it now. They will thank you late. Am glad you folowed your mommy intuition earlier is better.

Our ped’s nurse also gave me some encouragement and suggestions for moms having their infant dd’s ears pierced as well as for care of newly pierced ears.

If any other moms are considering newborn/infant ear piercing, then write me an e-mail if your thinking about it and want to do it.
